MIT scientists discovered that when starfish embryos spin up to the surface, they assemble into an organized, crystal-like structurs. The spinning of individual units sets off much larger ripples across the entire structure of this “living crystal.”
Their swirling, clustering behavior might someday inform the design of self-assembling robotic swarms.
