DC Power Trip: Takeaways on the grid, power & renewables and trade policy in an election year
On July 18, we hosted an investor field trip to Washington DC to meet with a group of power/grid think tanks, lobbyists, and trade policy experts, among others with our meetings' takeaways centered around: (1) transmission bottlenecks, (2) IRA uncertainty, (3) increasing tariffs, and (4) nuclear gaining momentum. The views contained within this report are those of the interviewees except the impact to our covered stocks. Following our meetings with Grid Strategies, the GS Office of Government Affairs, the DOE Loan Programs Office, the Nuclear Energy Institute and law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, our three key takeaways are as follows. Transmission is the key bottleneck to both load growth and renewables deployment. This can be addressed in the near term via deployment of more solar/storage relative to wind, which requires less transmission, as well as the adoption of grid enhancing technologies, which were highlighted by both Grid Strategies and the DOE Loan Program Office,
