Approach to the adult with lymphocytosis or lymphocytopenia - UpToDate
INTRODUCTION Lymphocytosis refers to an increase of peripheral blood lymphocytes, which for adults corresponds to >4000 lymphocytes/microL in most clinical laboratories. Lymphocytopenia refers to a decrease of peripheral blood lymphocytes, which generally corresponds to <1000 lymphocytes/microL in adults. This topic discusses the causes and our approach to clinical evaluation of lymphocytosis and lymphocytopenia in adults. The evaluation and causes of leukocytosis and lymphocytopenia in children are discussed separately. (See "Approach to the child with lymphocytosis or lymphocytopenia".) DEFINITIONS AND NORMAL VALUES The normal range (ie, two standard deviations above and below the mean) for the white blood cell (WBC) count in adults is 4400 to 11,000 cells/microL in most clinical laboratories. Lymphocytes generally constitute 8 to 33 percent of WBCs in peripheral blood. ● Absolute lymphocyte count – The absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) is used to quantitate lymphocytes in peripheral b
