I think so: to make a work of art is to occupy a small piece of space and time. To design is to occupy a small piece of space and time — a small piece of the universe and your short time in it — and give it to someone or something else. I’m not saying that artists are inherently self-absorbed, or that designers are inherently selfless, or even that a hard boundary exists between art and design.
