The Spuyten Duyvil School P.S. 24, despite some of its recent problems, is a school children want to get into. In fact, ensuring the right students made it through the front door had become its point of contention. Recently, some students were matched with P.S. 207 in Kingsbridge despite living just blocks from P.S. 24, according to parents involved in the matching. That would be a longer commute for many of the parents affected by the zoning rule, and they were ready to protest. However, that march was cancelled after Superintendent Maribel Hulla, new P.S. 24 principal Steven Schwartz, Councilman Andrew Cohen, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and state Sen. Jeffrey Klein worked out a solution that would admit those 53 children into P.S. 24. It means turning the school’s science lab and a meeting room into classrooms. “We made the classrooms for everybody,” Schwartz said. “Right now, it’s about sustainability for the course of six years on a long-term plan.” - Lisa Herndon After five month
