He is the Principal Investigator of PASTRES. An agricultural ecologist by original training, he has worked on dryland agrarian change, livelihoods and the politics of sustainability for over 30 years, including on pastoralism. His books include Living with Uncertainty: New directions in pastoral development in Africa (1995), Dynamic Sustainabilities: Technology, Environment, Social Justice (2010) and Sustainable Livelihoods and Rural Development (2015).
