undergrad at mit: my experience
MIT opens up worlds of possibilities to its undergraduates. Students arrive, acutely aware that they are being offered world-class resources that they accordingly fought tooth and nail for. We all want to make the most out of our days here. The second sentence above is highly nontrivial. We empathize with our peers regardless of background because we are intimately familiar with the hard work it takes to get here. In the selection process, students are treated without bias towards factors such as legacy and income, which cannot be said for comparable institutions in the United States. If you compare MIT to peer colleges, you'll find that students here have lower average family incomes yet higher economic mobility. MIT also heavily subsidizes student tuitions with its financial aid program. With the promise of an affordable and accessible education, MIT is shaped by the ideals of meritocracy.
